Well my birthday is right around the corner, so my beautiful wife and step-son teamed up to help me get a new hunting rifle. The Remington 700 AAC-SD with the 20″ barrel, chambered in .308 Winchester! Ooh baby! I’ll do a separate review on the rifle in the days to come.
In the mean time, the one thing I found undesirable with the rifle, is the small bolt knob.
When cycling the action, I would bash, then slide my thumb into the scope. Not only did this hurt, I can’t imagine it does great things for keeping my zero! The shorter lever also meant it was slightly more difficult than I had expected to cycle the action.
I began looking for solutions. All of the standard solutions required heavy duty work to be done to the bolt. Everything from cutting the bolt knob off, drilling and tapping for a threaded bolt that a knob could be screwed on to, to grinding down the bolt knob, then threading it for a replacement bolt knob. A few people do it themselves, but some pay a machinist/gunsmith to handle the job.
This really isn’t an option for me at this point in the game. I just got this rifle! The last thing I want to do is take a grinder to the bolt!
Enter Kinetic Research Group, and their Bolt Lift or Bolt Lift SV (Small Version.)
The KRG Bolt Lift SV, is a plastic bolt knob that fits over your existing bolt knob securely. This method rocks, considering my other options are:
- Do it myself and risk an “oops” with the grinder, in which I’m buying a new $150+ bolt
- I’m sending this thing off to a gunsmith for an expensive modification.
Anything I can do myself (and save money) has got my attention!
This bolt knob is priced right as it retails at only $28 USD! They come in multiple colors as well, to include OD Green, Black and Desert Tan.
The plastic is really quite heavy. I’m no manufacturer so I cannot speak technically on the subject of plastic molding, but it must be high density stuff because it almost feels like a metal bolt knob. Did I meantion it is Made in the USA? Thanks KRG for supporting ‘Merica!
As you can see, it comes with different size O-rings to ensure a snug fit to your existing bolt knob.
I used the smaller O-rings, and snapped it over my bolt knob. I then tightened down the enclosed allen-head screw, and voila! Done. Less than 5 minutes to do. This thing is completely tight, snug and secure on the bolt.
I then popped it into the rifle and tested the action. Let me tell ya, this thing is SWEET! Here’s a close-up:
I cannot believe it was only $28. Honestly, I’m baffled. It’s the single best upgrade I’ve made for such a small amount of money. My thumb no longer bashes my scope, cycling the action is smoother and easier due to better leverage, and being plastic, it didn’t add much in the weight department. Notice the little grippy part on there? I found once I started to get the palm sweat I get when I shoot, that this small feature made handling the knob a breeze. All the little details add up to make this an impressive little upgrade!
Finally, here’s the done deal in all it’s glory:
I truly cannot recommend this bolt knob enough. Whether you’re a hunter, a precision long-range shooter, a veteran sniper, or even for you military folks with impact cards and year-end money to spend, I would jump on these bad boys.
Honestly, initially I was concerned that being plastic this thing would be “Made in China” junk. I was WRONG! It’s rock-solid, and I’m truly impressed with it.
Did I mention these boys at KRG are OEF/OIF Veterans? Support our veterans, and take care of yourself at the same time.
If you want to pick up one, two, 15 of these you can grab them direct from KRG: here. (I do not get any commission, or kick-backs for these things, I am truly just sharing how impressed I am with this product)
I hope you find them to be as great a product as I have, and I’m sure the guys at KRG will take great care of you!
