When you’re creating your survival kits, make sure that you opt for waterproof backpacks that are easy to wear. Your kit will be useless if you can’t transport it. Even if you have the perfect bag, though, you need to make sure that you fill it with these five essential items.
1. Water purification tablets
It’s important to include water in your survival kit, but you also need to stock up on water purification tablets. Water purification tablets will enable you to drink water that would otherwise be unsafe. If you find yourself stranded for more than a day or two, utilizing your water purification tablets could save your life.
2. A heat source
Even if you don’t live in a cold climate, you need to include a heat source. Should you become injured or stuck in a cold, wet area, a heat source can mean the difference between life and death. Consider packing waterproof matches in your bag or a small emergency blanket to keep you warm wherever you may be.
Unfortunately, emergency situations don’t mean that your appetite will be diminished. In fact, you might be hungrier than ever. Include several snacks in your survival kit. Choose foods that store well and that are easy to eat, such as granola bars or beef jerky. Never pack perishable foods in your survival kit as these can go bad very quickly.
Each individual’s survival kit should contain his personal medications and hygiene products. If your doctor is an asthmatic, for example, make sure that her kit has an extra inhaler in it. If your son has allergies, include antihistamines in his bag.
You never know where you might end up in an emergency situation, so make sure that you include a usable knife in each bag. These could be used for opening packets of food, cutting branches, or even for self-defense.
