A tube tent is usually an orange polyethylene based plastic made in a tube to be used as a temporary shelter. As with most products in today’s market, stuff that was once made of good quality material has been reduced down to cheap materials and workmanship. I would classify this item as one of those products.
What Is A Tube Tent?
Almost all tube tents will be made of a very thin 2mil plastic that may or may not be fire retardant. It is around 8 feet long and is usually an orange color (as I mentioned above). I think of a trash bag as a good example of what this resembles.
How Do I Use A Tube Tent?
A tube tent will usually come with the polyethylene bag that has an opening on both ends and some cheezy rope. Most of them will be big enough to fit 2 people in them. That, however, depends on how you set the shelter up.
What you need to do is take the enclosed rope and start off by putting it through the tube like plastic bag (hence the name “Tube Tent”). Once you have that done you will need to have already picked out two spots in which to tie the rope. That can be done by tying it to two trees or some other stationary object that will not move to easy.
Once that is done all you have to do is spread out the bag and place whatever belongings you have inside. This will keep your stuff out of the elements and will give you a place to stay yourself! Instead of using the enclosed “cheezy” rope I would recommend you use paracord.
Using A Tube Tent In An Emergency.
If you haven’t already guessed, I am not a very big fan of the tube tent. I think that is is a cheap alternative and waste of money. However, in today’s economy the price tag of around $5.99 is a welcome invitation to most people. It is extremely light and fast to install. It doesn’t take up much room and, if you are careful with it, it can be used multiple times.
It will aid you in getting out of direct sunlight if there isn’t any shade around. It will be the most common shelter found in many survival kits. It will save you a lot of time if you don’t have the time to set up your own make-shift shelter. Many people use the tube tent as a bivvy bag as well.
Is This An Improvised Shelter?
In short, the tube tent is an improvised shelter. I feel that it would be a great product if the material were of a better grade. It is a main stay for many survival kits and I don’t foresee that changing anytime soon. I will leave it up to you to decide whether you put it in your kit. It has it advantages and disadvantages. I personally will use other options other than the tube tent.
